Sri Lanka tax questions
- Which Sri Lankan tax calculator do I need?
- For a monthly salary, use the salary and PAYE calculator. For a bonus or other one-off payment from your employer, use the bonus calculator (APIT Table 02). If you are leaving or retiring, the gratuity calculator covers terminal benefits (Table 03). If you live in Sri Lanka and work for an employer abroad, use the remote work calculator (Table 08). To work out what you owe or are owed on your 2025/26 return, use the income tax return calculator.
- Are these calculators official?
- No. They are independent calculators built from the Inland Revenue Department's published APIT tables, Tax Chart and return guide, each of which is linked from the page that uses it. Every page shows the date it was last checked against those documents. The Inland Revenue Act and the IRD's own assessment take precedence over any calculator, so treat the results as estimates.
- Is Sri Lanka a tax-free country?
- No. Sri Lanka charges personal income tax on employment income at progressive rates from 6% to 36%. There is a tax-free allowance, the first LKR 1,800,000 a year, but income above it is taxed.
- When does Sri Lanka's tax year run?
- From 1 April to 31 March. The 2026/2027 year of assessment covers 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, and 2025/2026 covers 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026. Rates announced in a budget usually take effect from the start of a year of assessment.
