I started a software company from a university boarding room, scaled it past 60 people, and exited it — while earning a PhD in AI at Queen's University Belfast, building algorithms that help hospitals decide when a patient is ready to go home. I still spend most of my week in production code: right now as CTO at Tellme AI, putting agentic AI into museums and public spaces, and as the author of From Model to Product.
Having built and scaled EchonLabs from the ground up to a team of 60+, and seen it through to an exit, I've learned that the most impactful work happens at the boundary between deep technical expertise and real-world business problems.
Most founders stop writing code somewhere around the second hire. I did not, and it is the reason I can tell you why the battery drain on a five-year-old Android decided our inference architecture, or why a museum kiosk has to know its own opening hours. I believe that production is where ideas become real. Not in notebooks. Not in demos. In systems that handle real users, edge cases, and the unpredictable messiness of the world.
