AVIF to JPG Converter

AVIF is the newest image format most browsers can show, and the one older software is least likely to open. This converter uses your browser's own AVIF decoder to turn each file into a JPG on your device, without uploading anything. Transparent areas are filled with a background colour you choose, white by default.

Or paste with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac). Accepts PNG, JPG, JFIF, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF and BMP. Nothing is uploaded.

Lower quality, smaller file. 90% looks unchanged for most photos.

#ffffff

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with this colour. Default white.

How to convert AVIF to JPG

  1. Add your AVIF files. Drop them on the box or click Pick files. Several at once is fine.
  2. Set the quality. JPG is already selected. 90% is the default and suits photographs; lower it if the file has to fit a size limit.
  3. Choose a background colour. Used only where the AVIF is transparent. Leave it white for documents and most web pages.
  4. Convert and download. Click Convert, then download each JPG or all of them as one ZIP.

Where AVIF files come from

AVIF stores a still image using the AV1 video codec, and its specification was published in 2019. Image services and large sites now send it to browsers that accept it because it is so small, so Save image as increasingly produces .avif files. You may also get them from design tools and image optimisers that export AVIF for the web.

Your browser has to be able to open AVIF for this page to convert it: current Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari all can. If yours cannot, the file is reported as unreadable rather than converted badly.

Things worth knowing

  • HDR and 10-bit AVIFs are converted to standard 8-bit colour, because JPG and the browser canvas both work in standard range. Bright highlights may look flatter than in the original.
  • Animated AVIF files become a single still frame.
  • Metadata is not copied across, so the JPG carries no camera details or location.

Questions people ask

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser decodes and re-encodes each image on your own device, so there is no server to upload to and nothing is stored. The page does fetch extra code from this site the first time you use certain features (the ZIP download, PDF output, a WebP encoder for browsers without one, and the HEIC decoder), but your images are never part of those requests.

Why can't I open AVIF files?

Support arrived in stages: Chrome in 2020, Firefox in 2021, Safari in 2022 and Edge only in early 2024. Many photo editors, older versions of Office and most upload forms still reject AVIF, even where the browser on the same computer shows it.

Should I convert AVIF to JPG or PNG?

JPG for photographs and anything going into an upload form or email. PNG if the image has transparency you need to keep or will be edited repeatedly; use the AVIF to PNG Converter for that.

Why is the JPG so much bigger than the AVIF?

AVIF's compression is a generation ahead of JPG's, so a JPG of similar quality is often around twice the size. That is the price of compatibility. Lower the quality if size matters.

Does converting AVIF to JPG reduce quality?

A little. The AVIF is decoded exactly, then JPG compresses it again. At 90% the difference is hard to see in photographs; text and fine lines suffer first.

If something goes wrong

The file is reported as unreadable

Update your browser, or try current Chrome or Firefox. If it still fails the file may be damaged, or may be a different HEIF-based format such as HEIC, which has its own HEIC to JPG Converter.

Colours look washed out or highlights are clipped

The source was probably HDR. JPG is standard range, so some brightness is lost; there is no setting that avoids it.

Edges of a cut-out have a halo

Pick a background colour matching where the image will sit, or keep transparency by converting to PNG.
