AVIF to PNG Converter

Convert AVIF images to PNG when you need to edit them, or when an app will not take AVIF. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, so the result matches what your browser displays for the AVIF. Everything happens on your device: the images are never uploaded.

Or paste with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac). Accepts PNG, JPG, JFIF, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF and BMP. Nothing is uploaded.

PNG is lossless, so there is no quality setting.

How to convert AVIF to PNG

  1. Add your AVIF files. Drop them on the box, click Pick files, or paste a copied image.
  2. Leave the output on PNG. PNG is selected on this page and has no quality setting, because nothing further is discarded.
  3. Convert. Click Convert. Each file reports its size before and after, which for PNG is usually a big jump.
  4. Download. Save each PNG, or all of them as one ZIP.

Why PNG is the right target for editing

AVIF is a delivery format: superb at making a finished image small, awkward as a working file. Editor support is still uneven, and every time a lossy AVIF is opened, changed and saved again it loses a little more. Converting once to PNG gives you a lossless master that any editor opens, survives any number of saves, and keeps the transparent background of a logo or cut-out intact.

When the edit is finished, export a web copy from the PNG. This tool does not produce AVIF, but PNG to WebP gets you most of the size saving with wider support.

Things worth knowing

  • Transparency survives exactly, including soft edges.
  • The PNG is 8-bit standard range. HDR and 10-bit AVIFs lose their extra range, because the browser canvas used for the conversion works in 8 bits per channel.
  • Animated AVIF files become a single still frame, and metadata is not copied across.

Questions people ask

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser decodes and re-encodes each image on your own device, so there is no server to upload to and nothing is stored. The page does fetch extra code from this site the first time you use certain features (the ZIP download, PDF output, a WebP encoder for browsers without one, and the HEIC decoder), but your images are never part of those requests.

Will the PNG look identical to the AVIF?

For ordinary images, yes: PNG stores exactly the pixels your browser decoded. The exception is HDR or wide-gamut AVIF, which is brought into standard sRGB colour on the way.

Why is the PNG ten times bigger?

AVIF throws away detail you cannot easily see and describes the rest very compactly; PNG keeps every pixel exactly. For photographs a tenfold increase is not unusual. If you do not need transparency or lossless editing, the AVIF to JPG Converter makes a much smaller file.

Can I convert PNG back to AVIF here?

No. This tool saves PNG, JPG, WebP and PDF. For a lighter web image from a PNG, WebP is the closest option it offers.

If something goes wrong

The file is reported as unreadable

Your browser needs AVIF support: update it or try current Chrome or Firefox. A damaged download will also fail here.

The PNG is too large to upload

Convert to JPG instead if the image has no transparency, or to WebP if the destination accepts it.

Colours shifted slightly

Wide-gamut colour was converted to standard sRGB. That is how the image will look on most screens anyway.
