What opens a .webp file?
Every current browser does: drag the file into a Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari window to view it. Beyond browsers it depends on how up to date your software is. Recent versions of Windows Photos and Paint, macOS Preview, the iPhone and iPad Photos app, GIMP and Photoshop read WebP; older photo viewers and Office installs, many print services, and plenty of upload forms on job, government and banking sites do not. WebP support simply arrived late outside browsers.
PNG has none of those gaps. It has been a standard since 1996, and anything that accepts pictures accepts PNG, which is why it is the safe target when a WebP will not open.
Why do images save as WebP?
Websites send WebP because it is smaller than JPG or PNG, so pages load faster. Your browser tells each site which formats it understands, and many sites and image services use that to send WebP in place of the original. Save image as then saves exactly what was delivered, so you get a .webp even though the site's author uploaded a JPG.
Occasionally the file arrives named .jpg or .png with WebP data inside, and an app rejects it as damaged. This converter reads the data rather than the name, so it handles those files too and writes a genuine PNG.
Transparency, animation and quality
Transparent and semi-transparent pixels carry across exactly, because both formats store a full alpha channel. Animated WebP is the exception to a clean conversion: the PNG made here holds one still image, so you get the frame the browser shows when it draws the animation as a still, normally the first. Keep the WebP if you need the movement.
PNG adds no blur or artefacts of its own, but it cannot restore detail a lossy WebP already threw away. Expect the PNG to be larger, often many times larger for photographs, because lossless storage cannot use the shortcuts that make WebP small.
Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android
On Windows 11, Paint can open a single WebP and save it as PNG; for a batch, drop them all here at once. On a Mac, Preview does the same through File, Export. On iPhone and iPad, open this page in Safari, tap Pick files and choose from Photos or Files; the PNG lands in the Downloads folder of the Files app. On Android, use Chrome the same way and the PNG is saved to Downloads.

Questions people ask
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. Your browser decodes and re-encodes each image on your own device, so there is no server to upload to and nothing is stored. The page does fetch extra code from this site the first time you use certain features (the ZIP download, PDF output, a WebP encoder for browsers without one, and the HEIC decoder), but your images are never part of those requests.
Should I convert WebP to PNG or JPG?
PNG if the image has transparency or sharp-edged content like text and diagrams. JPG if it is a photograph and file size matters more than perfect fidelity; use the WebP to JPG Converter for that.
Can I paste an image instead of saving it first?
Yes. Right-click an image in your browser, choose Copy image, then click on this page and press Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac). Copied images usually reach the clipboard as PNG whatever their original format.
If something goes wrong
The PNG is much bigger than the WebP
That is expected for photographs. If you do not need transparency, the WebP to JPG Converter makes a far smaller file.
A file shows an error
Open it in a browser tab. If the browser cannot show it either, the file is incomplete or is not an image at all; some sites serve a web page under an image's name.
