JFIF to PNG Converter

Convert .jfif images, which are JPEGs under another name, into PNG. PNG is lossless, so the image stops degrading each time it is edited and saved, and it is accepted in places that turn a .jfif away. The conversion runs in your browser and the files never leave your device.

Or paste with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac). Accepts PNG, JPG, JFIF, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF and BMP. Nothing is uploaded.

PNG is lossless, so there is no quality setting.

How to convert JFIF to PNG

  1. Add your .jfif files. Drop them on the box or click Pick files. Files saved by Windows browsers with a .jfif name are recognised even when their type is blank.
  2. Leave the output on PNG. PNG is selected on this page. There is no quality slider because PNG keeps every pixel.
  3. Convert. Click Convert. Each file shows its size before and after; expect the PNG to be larger.
  4. Download. Save each PNG, or all of them as one ZIP.

When PNG is the better fix

If all you need is a file that opens or uploads, PNG is overkill: renaming to .jpg is lossless and keeps the file small, and the JFIF to JPG Converter does that in bulk. Choose PNG when the image is going into an editor and will be saved several times, when a form or app asks for PNG specifically, or when it is a screenshot of text that you plan to annotate.

PNG does not undo JPEG compression. Blockiness or blur already in the .jfif stays exactly as it is; PNG only guarantees that nothing more is lost from here.

Things worth knowing

  • The PNG is usually several times larger than the .jfif, because lossless storage cannot use JPEG's shortcuts.
  • No transparency is added. A JPEG has no transparent areas to recover; removing a background needs an image editor.
  • Metadata such as EXIF, including any location data, is not copied into the PNG.

Questions people ask

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser decodes and re-encodes each image on your own device, so there is no server to upload to and nothing is stored. The page does fetch extra code from this site the first time you use certain features (the ZIP download, PDF output, a WebP encoder for browsers without one, and the HEIC decoder), but your images are never part of those requests.

Should I convert JFIF to PNG or JPG?

JPG in almost every case: it is the same format the .jfif already is, so the change is lossless and the file stays small. PNG is for editing and for destinations that require it.

Will PNG improve the quality of my JFIF image?

No. It preserves exactly what is in the file and prevents further loss, but it cannot bring back detail that JPEG compression has already discarded.

Why is my .jfif file called that?

Windows decides the extension for JPEG downloads from a registry setting, and on some PCs that setting says .jfif. The JFIF to JPG page explains the fix.

If something goes wrong

The PNG is too large

Use JFIF to JPG instead; it keeps the original size and quality.

I cannot see which files are .jfif

Turn on File name extensions in File Explorer's View menu, or select the whole folder's images and drop them all; PNG output suits any of them.

The background is not transparent

JPEG images never have transparency. Erase the background in an editor after converting.
