WebP is the format to reach for when a PNG is slowing a page down. It keeps transparency, supports both lossy and lossless compression, and is usually a good deal smaller than the equivalent PNG. Convert one image or a whole folder at once.

How to png to webp
- Add your PNGs. Drop in one image or a batch. Every file is processed on your device.
- Set the quality. Lower quality means a smaller file. Around 80 is a sensible default for photographs and screenshots alike.
- Convert and download. Convert, then save the results. Batches can be downloaded together.
Things worth knowing
- Transparency survives the conversion — WebP supports an alpha channel just as PNG does.
- Expect roughly 25-35% smaller files for typical screenshots and UI graphics, and considerably more for photographs.
- WebP is supported by every current browser. Some older desktop software and email clients still cannot open it, so keep the PNG if the image is going into a document rather than a web page.
Questions
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser using JavaScript, so the file never leaves your device — there is no server to upload to. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
Does converting PNG to WebP lose quality?
At the default quality the difference is not visible for most images, though the compression is lossy. Push the quality slider up if the image contains fine text or sharp diagrams where artefacts would show.
Will transparency be preserved?
Yes. WebP has a full alpha channel, so transparent backgrounds convert across cleanly.
Should I use WebP or AVIF?
AVIF usually compresses better but encodes slowly and has patchier support in older software. WebP is the safer default; AVIF is worth it when file size is the priority and you control the delivery.
